Background of the Study
Agribusiness development encompasses the entire value chain from production to marketing, processing, and distribution of agricultural products. In Nigeria, agribusiness is seen as a key driver of economic diversification and growth. Between 2023 and 2025, numerous initiatives have been introduced to support the development of agribusiness through improved access to finance, enhanced market linkages, and supportive government policies (Adeyemi, 2023). The theoretical foundation of these initiatives rests on the premise that a robust agribusiness sector can stimulate job creation, generate income, and reduce rural poverty. Empirical studies have shown that countries with well-developed agribusiness sectors tend to experience faster economic growth and higher levels of industrialization (Chinwe, 2024). In Nigeria, efforts to develop agribusiness include the establishment of agro-industrial parks, public–private partnerships, and capacity-building programs for farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs.

Despite these initiatives, the agribusiness sector in Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to modern technology, and inefficiencies in value chain integration. These constraints often limit the sector’s potential to contribute significantly to national economic growth. This study investigates the role of agribusiness development in Nigeria’s economic growth by analyzing its impact on employment, income generation, and overall industrial performance. It further examines the institutional and operational challenges that hamper the sector’s progress, with the aim of proposing strategies to enhance agribusiness performance and, in turn, stimulate broader economic development.

Statement of the Problem
While agribusiness holds significant promise as a catalyst for economic growth, its contribution in Nigeria has not reached the expected levels. Persistent challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, limited access to finance, and weak value chain coordination, undermine the efficiency of agribusiness operations (Ibrahim, 2024). These issues result in low productivity and high post-harvest losses, which diminish the sector’s potential impact on the national economy. Moreover, policy inconsistencies and bureaucratic hurdles further exacerbate the difficulties faced by agribusiness entrepreneurs, limiting investment and innovation. Consequently, despite government efforts to stimulate agribusiness, the sector continues to underperform relative to its potential as a driver of economic diversification and job creation. This study seeks to explore these constraints and evaluate the overall impact of agribusiness development on economic growth. By identifying key barriers and assessing their effects on performance, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for policymakers and industry stakeholders to harness the full potential of agribusiness in Nigeria.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of agribusiness development on Nigeria’s economic growth.
  2. To identify the challenges hindering the effective development of the agribusiness sector.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing agribusiness performance and value chain integration.

Research Questions

  1. How does agribusiness development contribute to economic growth in Nigeria?
  2. What are the main obstacles to effective agribusiness operations?
  3. Which interventions can enhance the competitiveness of the agribusiness sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H1: Enhanced agribusiness development positively contributes to national economic growth.
  2. H2: Infrastructure and finance constraints significantly impede agribusiness performance.
  3. H3: Improved value chain coordination increases the economic impact of agribusiness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on agribusiness initiatives in Nigeria between 2023 and 2025, using data from government reports, industry surveys, and case studies. Limitations include regional disparities in infrastructure and potential data gaps in the agribusiness sector.
